Founded in 1776 by Father Junipero Serra, “The Jewel of the Missions” is also home to those world-famous swallows. Stroll the beautiful grounds on your own or take a guided tour. Open 9 am to 5 pm.
Next, visit San Juan Capistrano’s award-winning public library. Its a great example of post-modern architecture designed by Michael Graves. Located near the mission at Acjachema and El Camino Real.
Have lunch at El Adobe Restaurant. This local landmark features delicious Mexican cuisine served in the Miguel Yorba Adobe, built in 1797 for one of California’s first settlers. Open 11 am to 9 pm.
Stroll the Los Rios Historic District. Explore California’s oldest neighborhood. You’ll find a mix of historic homes, shops, and quaint restaurants, including three adobe structures from 1794.
Take a coffee break (or pick up one to go) at Hidden Coffee, a favorite with District locals. Doors open before the first train arrives just in case you want to put this first on your itinerary!

The San Juan Capistrano Depot rests in the heart of the historic district and is an easy walk to the Mission and Los Rios District. Opened in 1894, the station is an example of the area's Mission Revival architecture.
