  • What is STEP?

STEP (Safe Transportation Education Program) provides select schools with FREE resources to encourage families to walk, roll or bike to school safely and more often. During this pandemic, STEP is providing distancing learning modules focusing on safe walking, rolling and biking practices for everyday life, that also satisfy specific California Department of Education (CDE) Health Education and Physical Education Standards.

    Program Objectives

STEP is a partnership project between the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) that will deliver Safe Routes to Schools activities at selected elementary schools throughout Orange County during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 school years. The goal of STEP is to encourage families to walk, roll or bike to school (and around their communities) as a safe and normal part of their everyday lives.

STEP is funded by a California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Active Transportation Planning (ATP) grant. While grant funding limits us to providing the full range of services to 25 elementary schools, we intend to make all distance learning modules available to all Orange County elementary schools.
